Best running apps for beginners (2026): an honest guide from a running-app developer

Last checked: October 2026

I make Flux Run, so I'm biased. Here's an honest list anyway, including apps that may suit you better.

NHS Couch to 5K

Free.

A fixed 9-week plan from the UK's National Health Service that takes you from no running to 5 km, with audio coaching for each session. It's a great first step, and the fixed schedule is proven: if you like being told exactly what to do, start here.

Nike Run Club

Free, no ads.

Hundreds of audio Guided Runs with coaches and athletes, plus adaptive plans for 5K to marathon. Everything is free. Best if you enjoy being talked through runs and don't want to pay anything.

Strava

Free; subscription for more features.

The best-known app for tracking runs and sharing them with friends and clubs. It's strongest as a community and logbook; for structured training plans, Strava points you to Runna, which it owns.

Runna

Paid subscription (free during a trial).

Polished, detailed training plans, popular with intermediate runners training for races, with Strava and watch integrations. Best if you already run regularly and want a premium race plan.

Flux Run

Free version; Pro for the AI coach.

My app. It builds a weekly plan for your goal, from first 5K to marathon, talks you through each kilometre or mile, and adapts the plan after every run, including making it easier when a run felt too hard. Available in 40 languages.

How to choose

Starting from zero? Our free Couch to 5K plan works with any app (or none). Questions: Flux Run FAQ.
